NATO is testing a new surface drone equipped with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), capable of returning to base after completing their missions.
These tests are mainly focused on maritime reconnaissance operations, using cameras attached to the drone’s structure to provide real-time surveillance. The UAVs are positioned on platforms external to the ship’s hull.
In light of the constantly changing maritime environment, NATO created Task Force X to address emerging threats. The initiative aims to integrate innovative technologies, such as maritime drones and artificial intelligence, with the goal of strengthening naval security and building a unified information network based on unmanned systems and cutting-edge technological solutions.
During the Drone Summit 2025, for example, the Latvian company NEWT21 presented the surface drone Fog Strike, notable for its lightness and durability. It is built with a modular hull made of aramid-reinforced carbon fiber, reflecting advances in the development of modern maritime platforms focused on innovation and defense.
